The expulsion of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCRH) staff from Venezuela and the persecution of individuals associated with Mountain Gateway by the Nicaraguan government have sparked international concern. The U.S. has imposed visa restrictions on more than 100 Nicaraguan municipal officials due to their involvement in repressive activities. Additionally, several U.S. representatives have expressed their alarm and have taken actions such as introducing resolutions and leading letters demanding the release of eleven imprisoned pastors in Nicaragua and calling for the reinstatement of the UN Human Rights Mission in Venezuela. International organizations and officials have condemned these actions, highlighting the intensification of government repression in Venezuela ahead of scheduled presidential elections and the ongoing persecution in Nicaragua for religious beliefs.
Signatory organizations strongly urge States, the UN Human Rights Council + the broader int'l community to insist on the reestablishment of an effective OHCHR presence in Venezuela, & the release of all those arbitrarily detained for political reasons. https://t.co/9Ez9rdvF50
The Maduro government is crushing anyone who dares to voice public dissent, but then it claims that any attempt to protect the rights of Venezuelans suffering repression reflects a "colonialist attitude." Maduro should look in the mirror. https://t.co/YVlKRQCbju
The UN rights office in Venezuela, which Maduro just shut down, shows the absurdity of coddling dictatorships with nice training sessions about how better to respect human rights. Only tough pressure has any chance of forcing them to ease their repression. https://t.co/Gx4BXw6H8N
🇻🇪Int'l orgs strongly condemn the expulsion of the members of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in #Venezuela, as govt repression had notably intensified ahead of scheduled presidential elections. 🔗Joint statement: https://t.co/9Ez9rdvF50
Everyone is entitled to the rights and freedoms set forth in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. We continue to work with the int’l community to promote accountability for those in Nicaragua who seek to stifle freedom of expression and religion or belief. https://t.co/LumnQf8Qg9
Read my statement with @RepDWStweets, @JoaquinCastrotx, and @RepWaltzPress demanding the immediate reinstatement of the UN Human Rights Mission in Venezuela and the passage of our AFFECT Human Rights in Venezuela Act: https://t.co/fZtuNsyMRK
Today I led a letter to call on Nicaragua to release the imprisoned pastors of Mountain Gateway Ministry. You can read more about the situation and my efforts here: https://t.co/kbR86J8pFy
NEW!!! U.S. imposes visa restrictions on more than 100 Nicaraguan municipal officials for their role in the Ortega-Murillo govt, which continues to engage in a repressive campaign that silences civil society and unjustly detains courageous individuals for exercising freedoms… https://t.co/jTxmSqj8qT
Today, I introduced a resolution condemning the unjust imprisonment of eleven Nicaraguan pastors with Mountain Gateway Ministries who are being held without access to legal counsel or their families. The Nicaraguan government should release these pastors immediately.
It’s extremely concerning to me that individuals associated with Mountain Gateway are being persecuted by the Nicaraguan government for their religious beliefs. I proudly stand with the AL Delegation to advocate for my brothers and sisters in Christ doing missions in Nicaragua.

The expulsion of @UNHumanRights staff from Venezuela is alarming. Escalating intimidation of dissenting voices exacerbates Venezuela’s humanitarian, political, and economic crises. @ONU_es
