President Donald Trump signed his sweeping "One Big Beautiful Bill" into law on July 4, turning the White House South Lawn into an Independence Day stage for the landmark measure.
The ceremony opened with a military display: a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber escorted by two F-35 fighters roared over the executive mansion as the national anthem played. Trump saluted the aircrews—credited with last month’s strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities—before inviting them to witness the signing.
The nearly 900-page package, estimated at about $3.3 trillion, extends the 2017 tax cuts and provides roughly $4.5 trillion in additional reductions over the next decade, offset by about $1.2 trillion in spending cuts. It doubles the child tax credit to $2,200, exempts tips and overtime from federal income tax, raises the state-and-local tax deduction cap to $40,000 for five years, and directs tens of billions of dollars to border security and a new "Golden Dome" missile-defense system while rolling back many Inflation Reduction Act clean-energy incentives. The bill also tightens work requirements for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Congress cleared the measure on 3 July after weeks of GOP negotiations. The House passed it 218-214 with two Republican defections and no Democratic votes; the Senate approved it 51-50 earlier in the week, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie. Trump praised House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for shepherding the bill.
Supporters call the legislation the largest middle-class tax cut in U.S. history and a boost to national security. Critics—including some conservatives and billionaire Elon Musk—warn it will widen the federal deficit and strip health coverage from millions. The White House nonetheless framed the signing as the defining domestic victory of Trump’s second term.
