Trump Administration Escalates Education Clash, Freezes $6.8 Billion in Grants

The Trump administration has launched a multi-front challenge to California’s education policies on gender and sexuality. On 20 June, the Department of Health and Human Services gave the state 60 days to remove all references to gender identity from a federally funded teen-pregnancy-prevention program, warning that failure to comply would jeopardize the grant.

Five days later, Education Secretary Linda McMahon concluded that the California Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation had violated Title IX by allowing transgender girls to compete on girls’ sports teams. The agencies have 10 days to bar transgender athletes, restore records and awards to female competitors, and certify compliance or face referral to the Justice Department and possible loss of federal funds.

The confrontation broadened on 1 July when the Education Department froze about $6.8 billion in K-12 grants pending a program review, including roughly $811 million earmarked for California. The hold affects after-school programs, English-learner instruction, migrant education and teacher training. California officials and teachers’ unions called the move illegal and warned that camps, staffing and literacy initiatives could be cut. Court challenges are expected if the money is not released.

US Education Department says it won't disperse nearly $7 billion in education funds to the states that Congress already approved. *Money is intended to cover staff salaries, teacher training, curriculum materials...etc. *This is wrong on multiple levels.
