Treasury Secretary Bessent Expects Stablecoin Law Ready by Mid-July

U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said on Monday that congressional work on a bill regulating crypto-linked stablecoins is on track to be finished by mid-July. She told reporters the forthcoming legislation should provide a clearer legal framework for dollar-pegged tokens and other reserve-backed digital assets.

Bessent added that once enacted, the measure is likely to generate additional demand for U.S. Treasuries because issuers of stablecoins typically hold short-dated government securities to back their tokens. She did not quantify the potential increase in Treasury purchases.

Separately, the secretary remarked that the optimal window for the federal government to have completed large-scale debt issuance was in 2021 and 2022, when borrowing costs were lower.
