In Sudan, a significant escalation in the use of fire as a weapon of war has been documented, with over 300 fires reported since the onset of the civil conflict in April last year. According to a study by the Center for Information and Research (CIR) and tracked by the Sudan Witness team, April 2024 marked the worst month, with 72 villages and settlements severely affected, totaling 201 since April 2023. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), supported by Emirati and Russian entities, have been identified as the main perpetrators, employing scorched earth tactics that have led to the destruction or damage of more than 200 villages and towns. These attacks have disproportionately affected areas housing refugees, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
