Senate Passes Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ Bill, Trimming Medicaid by $1 Trillion

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday approved President Donald Trump’s signature domestic policy package, commonly called the “Big Beautiful Bill,” on a 50-50 vote decided by Vice President J.D. Vance. Three Republicans—Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky—joined every Democrat in opposition.

The legislation pairs roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts skewed toward high-income earners with about $1 trillion in Medicaid reductions and additional cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Congressional Budget Office projects the Medicaid changes alone would leave 11 million to 17 million fewer Americans insured over the next decade. Analysts also estimate the package would swell the federal deficit by $3 trillion to $4 trillion.

Provisions added in last-minute negotiations include a $25 billion fund for rural hospitals, while requests for state-specific Medicaid carve-outs were largely rejected. The bill now returns to the House of Representatives, where Republican leaders say they aim to clear the measure and send it to Trump’s desk by the 4 July holiday.
