A twin-seat U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet crashed into the Red Sea on Tuesday after an arresting-gear failure caused the jet to overshoot the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) during a nighttime landing, according to officials cited by CNN, ABC News and Reuters. Both the pilot and the weapons-system officer ejected, were rescued by helicopter and sustained only minor injuries. The roughly $70 million fighter sank and has not been recovered.

The mishap is the second loss of a Truman-based Super Hornet in a little more than a week; a separate incident earlier this month also sent a jet overboard while the carrier was operating in the same area. No serious injuries were reported in either case.

Naval investigators are examining whether mechanical problems with the arresting gear contributed to the latest crash. The Harry S.
