German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that unemployed Ukrainian refugees in Germany will be required to find work or face the possibility of being forced to leave the country. This directive comes amid a growing refugee crisis in Germany, with approximately 700,000 Ukrainian refugees currently receiving unemployment benefits. Scholz emphasized that employment is crucial for refugees to secure their right to stay in Germany, noting that currently, only two out of ten refugees are working. A recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) revealed that half of the Ukrainian refugees in Germany, Poland, and Czechia are less likely to return to Ukraine due to concerns over security, infrastructure, housing, and the ongoing conflict.
