The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is facing a pivotal moment as it prepares to vote on the Law Amendment at its upcoming annual meeting in Indianapolis on May 23 and May 24. Proponents, including prominent figures like R. Albert Mohler, Jr. and William E. Wolfe, argue that the amendment is essential to maintain doctrinal clarity and prevent a liberal drift within the denomination. The amendment seeks to enforce male-only pastors, a stance they believe is rooted in biblical obedience rather than mere interpretation. Critics, however, argue that this move undermines local church autonomy. The debate has intensified with last-minute attacks and defenses, highlighting the high stakes for the future of the SBC. The amendment is also seen as a guardrail against egalitarianism and LGBT apostasy. Reid Bishop has used 2012 Bart Barber's views to counter arguments from Ken Hemphill.
“We should never fear obedience. No apocalypse is coming for siding with God’s Word against the world.” @reidbishop responds to Ken Hemphill on the Law Amendment for @BaptistLeaders https://t.co/QLARHX4Mvb
I love how, in this article, @reidbishop uses 2012 Bart Barber to correct 2024 Ken Hemphill on Baptist polity and associational history. The necessary practice of enforcing boundaries of our cooperation does not destroy local church autonomy. https://t.co/VAmLwWY6t1

SBC lay member, @reidbishop, provides an excellent response to Dr. Ken Hemphill on the Law Amendment. Reid argues, contra Hemphill, that the issue isn't "local church autonomy." The main issue remains whether the SBC will accept egalitarianism or not. https://t.co/GoMU6caMk7

On the question of women pastors and the Law Amendment, Dr. Mohler says: "It is very important we recognize this is an issue of biblical obedience. This is not just a question of biblical interpretation." Amen. https://t.co/JsCB6Lyt01
Thankful to see @albertmohler give a wholehearted defense of why the SBC needs the Law Amendment. “A church that disagrees with us is free to go…the SBC also has the equal right and the responsibility to set the parameters of our own cooperation.” https://t.co/U8CEpyR9Jn

Rejecting God's good design for male-only pastors in the church is like trying to defy gravity. Sooner or later, you crash. @dmichaelclary offers five dire warnings about what will happen to the SBC if we fail to ratify the Law Amendment in Indianapolis. https://t.co/ewl8K9othj
I’m very confident that the last-minute attacks on the Law Amendment in no way represent the views of the average SBC messenger. Which means, you and your church need to come to Indianapolis. It’s not at all too late to come. Make the trip—the future of the SBC is on the line.
This isn’t complicated. The Law Amendment is biblical. It’s Baptist. It’s necessary. It’s that simple. Ignore the 3000-word, Scripture-twisting think pieces against it. Stick with the Scripture and get it passed.
“The time to build the guardrail is before you go over the cliff.”@WillyRice Make no mistake: If the SBC does not build a guardrail against egalitarianism by ratifying the @sbcamendment—without delay—we will eventually go over the cliff of LGBT apostasy. https://t.co/tIdOTbZZ0s
