Russia has formally withdrawn from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, a key post-Cold War security treaty designed to de-escalate potential East-West conflicts. The treaty, which was signed more than thirty years ago by numerous countries of NATO and the former Warsaw Pact, limited the participants in the number of tanks, helicopters, and other military equipment. Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Lavrov, have been critical of NATO, calling it a relic of the past and suggesting the need to review the current geopolitical infrastructure of the world. The withdrawal from the treaty is seen as another sign of rising tensions between Russia and NATO.
