The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a significant increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally. New syphilis cases among people aged 15-49 rose by over one million in 2022, reaching eight million. This rise is a major concern for health officials, as global targets set for syphilis aimed to reduce new annual infections by seven million by 2030. Instead, infections increased by almost a million in 2022. Additionally, between June and October of 2023, there was a 25% increase in new gonorrhea cases in Washington, D.C. compared to 2022. Four curable STIs—syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis—account for more than one million infections each day. The report was published Tuesday.
