On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. outside a Washington, D.C. hotel. Hinckley fired six shots, hitting Reagan and three others. Dr. Benjamin Aaron of George Washington University Hospital removed a bullet from Reagan's lung, saving his life. The assassination attempt led to heightened security measures with the Pentagon detecting Soviet subs moving closer to the U.S. East Coast in response.
