The U.S. program for AIDS relief, PEPFAR, has been granted a one-year extension in the recent spending bill, receiving bipartisan support despite previous partisan disagreements, notably around abortion politics. This program, which has significantly contributed to the global fight against HIV/AIDS by saving over 25 million lives, faced uncertainty due to debates, particularly from Republicans. The extension, shorter than the typical five-year renewal, raises concerns about the program's future stability and its ability to plan long-term. The reauthorization of PEPFAR was confirmed by various sources, including Senator Durbin, who expressed satisfaction with the decision, and Speaker Pelosi, who highlighted the program's life-saving impact since its inception by President George W. Bush.
.@PEPFAR has saved tens of millions of lives since it was signed into law by President George W. Bush over two decades ago. It is great news that this critical initiative in our fight against HIV/AIDS will be reauthorized in this week's government funding package.
The US HIV aid program @PEPFAR is getting a 1-year renewal (instead of the standard 5-year) after Republicans have held it up over abortion politics. I'm told that this is good, but it still will compromise long-term planning if nations don't know if they can count on the US.
HIV FUNDING: Great news it was preserved in the latest budget - thank you Congress! https://t.co/kkvubaDY8M
ACP currently helps millions of Americans. However, Congress has yet to approve new funding and therefore ACP could end after next month. More here: https://t.co/yWvoKT7m82

Pleased to see that PEPFAR will be extended for one year in the minibus we are considering this week. It is bewildering to me that some argued we shouldn't reauthorize this historic lifesaving program, which has saved more than 25M lives.
