Newark Mayor Baraka Arrested After Protest at ICE’s Delaney Hall Facility

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was taken into federal custody on Friday after allegedly trespassing at Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, acting U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba said.

Homeland Security Investigations stated that Baraka joined a group of protesters, including Democratic Representatives Robert Menendez Jr. and Bonnie Watson Coleman, who “stormed” the facility’s gate as a detainee transport bus entered. Video published by news outlets shows barriers being crossed while officers ordered the group to leave. The lawmakers said they were attempting an oversight visit to assess conditions inside the center.

Baraka faces a federal misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass. “He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand,” Habba told Fox News, adding that further charges are possible. DHS did not specify whether the members of Congress would be charged; no injuries were reported.

Delaney Hall reopened under a new ICE contract earlier this year despite a Newark ordinance barring new detention agreements. City officials argue the facility lacks municipal permits and violates zoning rules, while DHS maintains it meets federal standards. The confrontation highlights escalating tensions between local Democrats and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement in New Jersey.
