New York City lawmakers unanimously adopted a $115.9 billion budget for fiscal 2026, the largest in the city’s history and about $3.5 billion more than last year’s plan. The vote came after a handshake agreement between Mayor Eric Adams and Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, allowing the administration to meet the July 1 deadline with an on-time, balanced package.

The deal adds roughly $50 million for immigrant legal services and makes permanent the city’s 3-K and Pre-K programs. It also funds a universal child-care pilot for infants in low-income families, expands seven-day library service to 10 additional branches, increases access to mental-health care and finances 60 new positions to regulate e-bike deliveries.

The budget sets aside $8.5 billion in reserves as economists warn of slower tax growth and possible reductions in federal aid. Mayor Adams described the agreement as the administration’s “best budget ever,” while Speaker Adams called it “pretty close” to perfect, underscoring a markedly smoother negotiation than in previous years.
