Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday paid his first visit to Kibbutz Nir Oz since the Hamas assault of 7 October 2023, arriving 636 days after militants killed or abducted 117 residents—roughly a quarter of the community.

Netanyahu entered the kibbutz, located a short drive from the Gaza border, through a rear gate as dozens of demonstrators gathered at the main entrance. Some protesters shouted that the government had abandoned the settlement and demanded an agreement to secure the release of Israelis still held in Gaza.

During the visit the premier met and embraced Einav Zangauker, a prominent critic whose son Matan remains captive. Speaking to residents, Netanyahu said that about 20 hostages are believed to be alive in Gaza and vowed, “We will return them all.”

The long-delayed trip underscores persistent public anger over the government’s handling of the October 2023 attack and the fate of the remaining captives, issues that continue to dominate Israeli politics nearly two years after the raid.
