U.S. Representatives Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Frank Pallone are advocating for the sunset of Section 230, a law that has historically facilitated the growth of the internet but is now criticized for allowing Big Tech companies to evade accountability for harms caused by their platforms. This legislative push, highlighted in a WSJ oped, is met with opposition from various quarters, including Adam Thierer and TheFIREorg, who argue that repealing Section 230 could damage free speech and the digital economy by limiting online opportunities.
From @WSJopinion: Section 230 is poisoning the healthy online ecosystem it once fostered. Big Tech companies are exploiting the law to shield them from accountability as their platforms inflict immense harm, write @cathymcmorris and @FrankPallone. https://t.co/GzcjN2YMCz
Try criticizing the nature of the current iteration of Section 230 (which is a failure) on Twitter and you will quickly get propaganda accounts rambling and strawmanning. I wonder who would want to maintain state-coopted corporate censorship on the net? hmmmm
Revise Section 230 to make it clear that a website/app can be a platform or publisher with all attendant responsibilities and privileges, but can't act as both. Then pass an internet bill of rights extending especially the 1st and 4th to the digital realm. Problem solved.
🧵Some in Congress are once again calling to kill Section 230. They argue that doing away with the law won’t “break the internet” or hurt free speech. We disagree. In fact, repealing Section 230 would jeopardize free speech. https://t.co/bgMEurZgvr
Absolutely horrible WSJ oped by Rep. Rodgers and Pallone about Section 230, the law that powered the Digital Revolution and expanded online opportunities for all citizens. They say they don’t want to break the internet or hurt free speech, but that is precisely what they will do… https://t.co/5u9l9JDCm5
Section 230 helped shepherd the internet into today’s global nexus of communication and commerce, but it's now poisoning the online ecosystem it once fostered. That's why @cathymcmorris and I are proposing new legislation to sunset Section 230. https://t.co/jb3samRMor
Big Tech is exploiting Section 230 to shield them from any sense of responsibility or accountability as their platforms inflict immense harm. That’s why I’m leading with @FrankPallone to sunset Section 230. It’s time for a new era of the internet. https://t.co/Mk6aSHpUze
