Six months after devastating wildfires swept through Lahaina and Upcountry Maui, the community is still grappling with the aftermath. The fires resulted in the loss of 100 lives and the displacement of thousands, with 5,000 survivors currently living in hotels and expressing fatigue over 'broken promises'. The historic town of Lahaina was razed, leaving many with high rates of depression and lung damage. Efforts to rebuild and recover are ongoing, with the federal government deploying over 1,000 personnel and providing more than $1.5 billion in relief funding from FEMA. Federal funds are also being directed to aid individuals and business owners affected by severe storms and flooding that occurred in August, with a focus on preventing future disasters. Lawmakers have pledged to continue supporting Maui's recovery, emphasizing the need for time, resources, and sustained effort.
Today marks 6 months since the Maui fires. We continue to grieve with the people of Lāhainā and everyone who lost family, friends, homes, and businesses. There's still a long way to go in Lāhainā’s recovery, & we're going to keep doing everything we can to deliver federal aid. https://t.co/L9pyVLbKn9
Since Aug. 8, the federal government has sent more than 1,000 personnel to support Maui's recovery efforts, and over $1.5 billion in relief funding. This is an important start, but we have to stay the course—Maui’s recovery will take time, resources, and a continuity of effort. https://t.co/hfuPFi6CrV
Today is the six-month anniversary of the Maui fire that killed 100 people & destroyed 2200 structures, razing the historic town Lahaina. 5000 survivors are still in emergency hotel shelters, as tourists occupy short term rentals. Rates of depression & lung damage are high.
Thank you @POTUS and @FEMA! Federal funds are on the way to our district for those affected by the severe storms and flooding in August. The money will go toward helping individuals and business owners recover from the destruction and prevent future disasters!…
It's been 6 months since the deadly wildfires tore through Lahaina & Upcountry Maui, killing 100 people and displacing thousands more. Rebuilding Lahaina will take time and a continuity of effort, and I will continue doing everything in my power to help Maui recover and rebuild. https://t.co/uXcTey5dgT
