The New York City Board of Elections on Tuesday confirmed Zohran Mamdani as the winner of the city’s Democratic mayoral primary, releasing ranked-choice tabulations that gave the state assemblyman 56% of the vote to former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 44% in the third round.

Mamdani, 33, secured 545,334 votes—more than any Democratic primary contender since David Dinkins in 1989—after collecting roughly two-thirds of ballots redistributed from eliminated candidates. Cuomo, 67, finished with 428,530 votes and has conceded, though his name will remain on the November ballot unless he formally withdraws.

The result sets up a four-way general election on Nov. 4 in which Mamdani will face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and independent attorney Jim Walden. About 900,000 ballots were cast in the primary, and 53,534 were exhausted under the ranked-choice system the city adopted in 2021.

Mamdani’s decisive victory, the latest and largest for New York’s progressive wing, signals a leftward shift in the Democratic electorate and primes the nation’s biggest city for a debate over rent freezes, new taxes on high earners and the future of public safety.
