Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich Assumes NATO, EUCOM Command, Affirms Ukraine Can Win War Against Russia

Lieutenant General Alexus G. Grynkewich, nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and commander of U.S. European Command (EUCOM), has expressed confidence that Ukraine can win its war against Russia. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Grynkewich stated that when a homeland is threatened, its people fight with a tenacity difficult for others to fully comprehend.

Grynkewich, a former F-16 and F-22 pilot with Belarusian heritage, officially assumed command of NATO's Allied Command Operations on July 4, 2025, succeeding General Christopher Cavoli, who held the position since 2022. Grynkewich’s remarks align with those of previous U.S. generals who have led EUCOM, all of whom have conveyed belief in Ukraine’s potential to prevail in the conflict with Russia. NATO and allied officials have welcomed Grynkewich’s appointment as a demonstration of the strength of transatlantic military cooperation.
