Iran Halts IAEA Cooperation, Citing Bias After Strikes on Nuclear Sites

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told French President Emmanuel Macron in a phone call on Sunday that Tehran has halted its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency because the agency’s director general, Rafael Grossi, is no longer acting with what he called the necessary neutrality. Pezeshkian said the move was a “natural response” to the IAEA’s "destructive" stance and its failure to condemn U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during this month’s 12-day conflict, according to a statement from the Iranian presidency released Monday.

The suspension follows a June 25 vote by Iran’s parliament mandating an end to voluntary cooperation with the UN watchdog, including access for inspectors, until Grossi’s conduct is addressed. Lawmakers cited the June 13 Israeli attack, subsequent U.S. strikes, and a June 12 IAEA Board resolution faulting Iran for non-compliance as evidence of bias.

Macron urged a swift resumption of the agency’s work and a return to broader negotiations on Iran’s ballistic-missile and nuclear programs, his office said. France, Germany and the United Kingdom later issued a joint statement condemning what they described as threats against Grossi and warning that Iran’s decision undermines international monitoring of its nuclear activities.
