House Narrowly Approves Trump’s $4.5 Trillion Tax and Spending Bill

The U.S. House of Representatives approved President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax cut and spending package on a 218–214 vote, sending the legislation to the White House and allowing the administration to meet its self-imposed July 4 deadline. The narrow margin came after the Senate passed the measure earlier in the week, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.

The 800-plus-page measure extends and expands roughly $4.5 trillion in tax breaks first enacted in 2017, while steering about $350 billion toward national security programs and Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda. To offset some of the lost revenue, the bill trims an estimated $1.2 trillion from Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by tightening work requirements. The Congressional Budget Office projects the package will widen the federal deficit by $3.3 trillion over the next decade and leave 11.8 million more people without health coverage.

Two Republicans joined all Democrats in opposing the bill. Passage followed an overnight effort by Speaker Mike Johnson and the president to win over GOP holdouts, and came after House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries attempted to derail the vote with a record-setting 8-hour-44-minute floor speech.

Because the House cleared the Senate version unchanged, the legislation now requires only President Trump’s signature to become law.
