House GOP Rushes Vote on Trump’s $4 Trillion Tax, Immigration Megabill

House Republican leaders are moving to vote as soon as Wednesday on President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending package after the Senate cleared the measure 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote. Speaker Mike Johnson said the goal is to deliver the bill to Trump’s desk by the July 4 holiday, despite flight delays that could complicate lawmakers’ return to Washington.

Branded the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by the White House, the legislation would extend and expand 2017 tax cuts, create new deductions for tips, overtime and older adults, and lift the state-and-local tax deduction cap to $40,000. It includes roughly $4.5 trillion in tax relief over a decade, plus about $350 billion for defense and immigration enforcement. Savings are sought through tighter work rules and reduced federal funding for Medicaid and SNAP. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the Senate version would widen deficits by $3.3 trillion over ten years and leave 11.8 million more people without health coverage.

Johnson’s margin is razor-thin: with the House split 220-212, Republicans can afford only three defections. Fiscal hawks Chip Roy and Ralph Norman already voted against advancing the bill in the Rules Committee, and moderates object to Medicaid cuts, while Democrats remain unanimously opposed. GOP leaders are betting that the political cost of bucking Trump—who publicly castigated dissenting senators—will keep wavering members in line as the chamber races toward a final vote.
