Hamas Seeks Ceasefire Linked to Permanent End of Gaza War

Hamas said on Wednesday it is ready to accept any initiative that "clearly leads to the complete end to the war," underscoring its demand that a ceasefire in Gaza be permanent. The statement by senior official Taher al-Nunu came ahead of fresh talks in Cairo with Egyptian and Qatari mediators.
The declaration follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that Israel had agreed to a U.S.–backed plan for a 60-day truce and urged Hamas to endorse the deal. Hamas has not rejected the proposal outright but insists that Israel commit to ending the conflict—a condition Israel has so far refused.
An Israeli official said the draft arrangement would involve a partial troop pull-back from Gaza, a surge in humanitarian aid and discussions on a longer-term settlement, but stops short of promising a permanent ceasefire. Israel maintains the war will end only after Hamas is defeated and disarmed.
Diplomats hope the Cairo talks can bridge the gap and secure the release of roughly 50 remaining hostages. The war, now in its 21st month, has left more than 56,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and displaced the vast majority of the enclave’s 2.3 million residents.
