Explorers have announced the discovery of what they believe to be the wreckage of World War II ace pilot Richard Bong's plane in the South Pacific. The discovery was made public on Thursday, ahead of Memorial Day. Richard Bong, an American hero who grew up in Douglas County, shot down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1944.
