Former CIA software engineer Joshua Schulte was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Thursday afternoon for the 'Vault 7' leaks to WikiLeaks, which the Department of Justice has characterized as one of the most brazen acts of espionage in American history. The DOJ had sought a life sentence. Schulte's sentencing was live-tweeted by Inner City Press. In addition to espionage, Schulte was convicted of possessing child pornography. The leaks, dating back to 2016, involved a comprehensive suite of hacking tools and represented the largest leak of classified material in CIA history. During his sentencing, Schulte reportedly offended the judge by comparing conditions in a NYC jail to a Nazi camp.
