Education Secretary Linda McMahon has confirmed that mass layoffs at the Department of Education are the first step toward its eventual shutdown, aligning with President Donald Trump's long-standing goal to eliminate the agency. McMahon stated that the layoffs, affecting nearly 50% of the department's workforce, are intended to eliminate 'bureaucratic bloat' while ensuring that educational programs continue uninterrupted. The layoffs will see 1,315 employees terminated, in addition to the 600 who have already accepted buyouts. The layoffs, announced to take effect starting March 21, will see about 1,950 employees placed on administrative leave with full pay and benefits until June 9, followed by severance or retirement packages. McMahon emphasized that the department will retain 'the right people' to manage grants and appropriations effectively. Trump has repeatedly advocated for the dissolution of the Department of Education, arguing that education policy should be managed by states and local governments. The move is part of a broader effort to streamline government operations and reduce federal spending, fulfilling a campaign promise by Trump.
