Ecuador is grappling with organized crime, which has led to the arrest of 68 suspected gang members for allegedly trying to take over a hospital. President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency on January 8 after cartel boss Adolfo Macías escaped from prison, in an effort to curb the influence of powerful narco gangs. The government is seeking financial support from the U.S. and European countries and plans to extend output from an oil block to fund the fight against crime. President Noboa noted a decrease in violent murders since the emergency was declared, but the war on gangs is not yet won. The influence of Mexican and Colombian cartels was underscored in a report linking the violence to the death of a kingpin. The U.S. is aiding Ecuador with over 20,000 bulletproof vests, security equipment worth around $1 million USD, and additional FBI personnel to support local law enforcement.
