The Indian government has issued an advisory to states in response to a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases, particularly in Kerala, and the emergence of the JN.1 variant. The Centre has advised an increase in RT-PCR testing. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a 'variant of interest' due to its 'rapidly increasing spread'. Kerala has reported a surge in cases, with 1,828 active cases, 19 more sequences of JN.1 found, and 10 deaths this month. In Karnataka, masks have become mandatory for people over 60 in public spaces. The WHO's declaration came on December 19, and since then, the variant has been detected in several states across India, with 21 cases confirmed and a total of 2669 active cases in the country. Health officials warn that the new variant, which is now the fastest-growing in the US, could drive a new wave of disease across the country during the holiday season. Despite the concerns, the public health risk is deemed low, and current vaccines continue to protect against severe disease and death from JN.1 and other variants. Health officials, including the Union Health Minister, have stated there is 'no need to panic' and that the variant is escaping many people's immunity.
