A new study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals concerning statistics about firearm storage in the United States. The study shows that up to 43% of U.S. households do not store guns securely, with many keeping firearms loaded and unlocked. Notably, 25% of adults in seven states reported having a loaded firearm and a child or teen in the home, with the firearm being kept unlocked. Additionally, 4.6 million children in the U.S. live in homes with access to an unlocked or unsupervised firearm. The study underscores the importance of secure firearm storage, including storing guns unloaded and ammunition separately, to prevent potential injuries and fatalities, particularly among children and teens. Legislators, including Rep. Sherrill, are responding with new laws aimed at promoting safer storage practices to reduce gun-related accidents and deaths, such as the recently signed legislation in RI.
