The Canada-CARICOM Summit is underway in Ottawa, with leaders from Canada and Caribbean countries coming together to discuss important issues. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Caribbean leaders to emphasize their commitment to working together for the benefit of people in both regions. The summit's agenda includes creating good jobs, ending poverty, growing the middle class, and fighting climate change. Additionally, discussions on strengthening the economic partnership between Canada and CARICOM countries have taken place, with last year's two-way merchandise trade reaching $1.8 billion. In light of the worsening violence in the Caribbean, Trinidad has requested Canada's assistance in addressing this issue. The summit aims to foster stronger bilateral ties and address the core governance challenges faced by countries like Haiti. The importance of unity and breaking down colonial barriers has also been highlighted by Grenadian socialist revolutionary Maurice Bishop.
