Argentina Allows Lula to Visit Kirchner Under House Arrest

A federal judge in Buenos Aires on 2 July authorized Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to visit former Argentine leader Cristina Fernández de Kirchner at the apartment where she is serving a six-year corruption sentence under house arrest. The ruling, issued by Judge Jorge Gorini of the Tribunal Oral Federal No. 2, stipulates that the encounter scheduled for Thursday must comply with strict conditions, including avoiding disturbances in the neighborhood.

Kirchner, 72, was placed under house arrest on 18 June after the Argentine Supreme Court upheld her conviction for fraud in public-works contracts. Because visits beyond a pre-approved list require judicial clearance, her lawyers petitioned for an exemption so she could receive Lula, a long-time political ally who spent 19 months in prison before Brazil’s Supreme Court annulled his conviction.

Lula arrived in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening to attend the 66th Mercosur summit, where Brazil will assume the bloc’s rotating presidency and press for the long-delayed trade accord with the European Union. His schedule does not include a bilateral meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei, but aides said the visit to Kirchner is expected to take place after the summit’s closing session on Thursday.
