April has been recognized as World Autism Month and Autism Acceptance Month by various U.S. lawmakers and organizations, highlighting the need for increased awareness, acceptance, and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Representative Judy Chu, a member of the Congressional Autism Caucus, mentioned that 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults live with autism in the U.S. and pledged to fight for a country where autistic people are recognized and have all the opportunities they deserve. Senator Menendez pointed out that New Jersey has the highest rate of autism in the nation and referenced the AutismCARES Act, aimed at expanding and improving federal investments for individuals with autism across the country. Other lawmakers, including Representatives Mike Lawler, Cardenas, Lois Frankel, and Gus Bilirakis, emphasized the importance of embracing the unique perspectives and talents of those on the autism spectrum, advocating for a more inclusive world, and working towards understanding and acceptance. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) also highlighted that adults on the autism spectrum can benefit from services and supports that improve health and well-being across the lifespan.
