Airbus, ASML Lead 45-CEO Push to Delay EU AI Act

A coalition of 45 chief executives representing more than 110 European companies—including Airbus, ASML, SAP, Mistral AI, Mercedes-Benz and BNP Paribas—has called on the European Commission to suspend implementation of the bloc’s landmark Artificial Intelligence Act.

In an open letter dated 3 July, the executives asked Brussels for a two-year “clock-stop” before the law’s first obligations take effect on 2 August 2025. They say the absence of a promised Code of Practice and other detailed guidelines leaves companies unable to prepare and risks eroding Europe’s competitiveness against the United States and China.

Adopted last year, the AI Act imposes tiered requirements on developers and users of AI systems. From August 2025, general-purpose models must disclose training data, test for bias and toxicity, and report energy use; enforcement powers, backed by fines of up to 7% of global revenue, begin in August 2026.

A Commission spokesperson said the European AI Board is discussing releasing the Code of Practice by the end of 2025 but insisted the statutory deadlines remain unchanged. While some politicians support industry demands, Brussels has so far rejected calls for a formal delay.
