Romanian President-elect Nicușor Dan traveled to Warsaw, Poland, to support Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw and a pro-European candidate in the upcoming Polish presidential election. Dan's visit coincides with a critical week before the second round of voting on June 1, where Trzaskowski will face off against nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki. During his visit, Dan met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for a 40-minute meeting and participated in a rally known as the 'March of a Million Hearts' in Bankowy Square, Warsaw, in support of Trzaskowski.
In his speech at the rally, attended by tens of thousands, Dan emphasized shared values between Romania and Poland, such as democracy, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. He highlighted Romania's recent rejection of isolationism and Russian influence, expressing confidence that Poland would follow suit in the upcoming election. Dan also stressed the importance of a strong Poland within a robust European Union, pledging to work closely with Trzaskowski and Tusk to enhance collaboration between the two nations and strengthen the EU.
The Polish presidential race has drawn significant attention, with Trzaskowski and Nawrocki representing contrasting visions for Poland's future. Trzaskowski, supported by the centrist government, advocates for continued integration with the EU, while Nawrocki, backed by nationalist forces and previously supported by George Simion, has expressed skepticism towards EU policies and support for Ukraine's NATO membership. The outcome of the election is seen as pivotal for Poland's role in Europe and its stance on key international issues.
