The Houston City Council has approved a $7.3 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, with a vote of 15-2, marking the completion of Mayor John Whitmire’s first budget cycle. The budget includes increased spending on drainage projects in vulnerable neighborhoods, additional police officers, and a new program to improve heavy trash pickup services. Additionally, the council passed a historic $650 million judgment bond to provide backpay to firefighters over the next 25 to 30 years, as part of a total settlement of $1.5 billion, which also includes a 5-year collective bargaining agreement. The bond deal was approved with a 14-3 vote.
