Robert Prevost, First American and Peruvian, Elected Pope Leo XIV After Decades in Chiclayo

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a dual citizen of the United States and Peru, has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Pope Francis. Prevost is the first pope from both countries, and the first American pope. Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost spent over 30 years in Peru, initially serving as a missionary and later as bishop and archbishop of Chiclayo and in Callao. He became a naturalized Peruvian citizen in 2015. His extensive pastoral work, including hands-on assistance during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, such as securing oxygen plants, has led many Peruvians to consider him as one of their own. Following the announcement, celebrations erupted across Peru, with church bells ringing in Lima and crowds gathering in public squares. President Dina Boluarte described the event as a historic moment for both Peru and the United States, emphasizing Prevost's deep connection to the country. U.S. President Donald Trump also welcomed the news. In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful in Spanish and sent a special message to his former diocese in Chiclayo, referencing his journey 'from Chicago to Chiclayo.' He is known for enjoying Peruvian cuisine and for his humility and leadership. Prevost previously led the Vatican's Dicastery for Bishops, a key role in the global Catholic Church. Some concerns have been raised regarding his handling of abuse complaints during his tenure in Chiclayo. Despite this, his election has been widely celebrated in Peru, where many see him as 'almost Peruvian.'
