Peru’s Council of Ministers has approved a decree raising President Dina Boluarte’s monthly salary to 35,568 soles—about US$10,000—up from 16,000 soles. The 122 percent increase, published on 3 July, ends a pay freeze that had been in place since 2006.
Economy and Finance Minister Raúl Pérez Reyes said the adjustment follows a comparative study of presidential pay in 12 Latin-American countries, where Peru ranked second-lowest. The new figure is roughly 35 times the national minimum wage of 1,025 soles and positions Peru’s head of state among the region’s better-paid leaders.
The timing has drawn criticism from economists and opposition lawmakers, who note that Boluarte’s approval rating hovered around 2 percent in a May Ipsos survey. Analysts warn the move could intensify political discontent as the president, in office since December 2022, faces ongoing investigations and public pressure over rising crime and alleged ethical breaches.
