Liverpool Football Club said it was "devastated" by the death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, 28, who was killed in the early hours of Thursday along with his brother, André, in a car crash near Zamora in north-western Spain.
Spain’s Guardia Civil said the brothers’ vehicle left the A-52 motorway close to the town of Cernadilla, apparently after a tyre burst, before overturning and catching fire. Fire-fighters from Rionegro del Puente found no survivors at the scene and an investigation into the exact cause of the accident is under way.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, helping the club lift the FA Cup in 2022 and two League Cups. He had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso late last month and is survived by her and their three children.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who coached the forward for four seasons, said on Instagram that he was "heartbroken" and "struggling to see a bigger purpose," calling Jota "a fantastic player, a great friend, a loving husband and father." Tributes also poured in from current and former team-mates and the Portuguese Football Federation as the sport mourned one of its most prominent forwards.
