Northern Governors’ Forum Meets in Kaduna Led by Katsina Governor, Endorses State Police as APC Majority Hits 265 Amid Opposition Defections

The Northern Governors’ Forum convened a crucial meeting in Kaduna on May 10, 2025, to address escalating insecurity and poverty in the region. Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda led a strategic session of the North-West Governors’ Forum as part of ongoing efforts to tackle these challenges. The forum, together with the Northern States Traditional Council, endorsed the creation of state police and urged the National Assembly to expedite its establishment. The governors also focused on issues such as drug abuse and insecurity during their discussions. Concurrently, political dynamics in Nigeria are shifting as opposition politicians increasingly defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This trend has boosted the APC’s majority in the National Assembly to 265 seats. Former Kano State Governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party leader Rabiu Kwankwaso criticized the defections, which are seen as undermining the opposition’s efforts to mount a united front against the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. In response to the defections and internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party, governors elected on its platform have invited former governors and stakeholders to a meeting in Abuja to strategize on the party’s future.
