Yuga Labs has announced a significant shift in the intellectual property strategy for Moonbirds, moving away from the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license, which allowed unrestricted public use of their art. The company will introduce a new art direction with commercial rights for holders, featuring 3D avatars for OthersideMeta and a satellite event at Apefest 2024 in Lisbon. Despite the change, the original Moonbirds art remains CC0, as the license is irrevocable, but Yuga Labs aims to transition users to the new art that includes intellectual property restrictions. This announcement was part of the Moonbirds Universe Announcement, and the new art will be distinctive from the Mythics art.
lmao people are buying moonbirds on this news? Imagine spending any time utilizing an IP that already went from commercial to cc0 and back to commercial. Reminds me of the people willing to ride the degods chain hopping merry-go-round.
Moonbirds will need to create a whole new set of art... ...and not release the rights for public use... ...and have existing Moonbird holders who own public license art be ok with that. It is possible... Yuga could had CC0'ed apes... and then licensed Mutants for example
Someone show me all the cool Moonbirds stuff people will no longer be able to make because the CC0 got revoked?
if you're frustrated about the Moonbirds CC0 license "being revoked" and the art being updated I'd love to see your favorite Moonbird homages which make use of the license in your favorite ways possible
Don’t forget today starts the new Moonbirds (aka Yuga Labs) rule where they can revoke CC0 privileges. Don't forget the Deadline is today!!! I do not give Moonbirds, or any entities associated with Yuga Labs permission to revoke my CC0 rights, both past and future. With this… https://t.co/AtTRo61R95

Just so everyone is clear on this: CC0 IS IRREVOCABLE. See Section 2: https://t.co/LVuGNbE7C8 @moonbirds @proof_xyz
Thoughts on @moonbirds: 1. People said you can't reverse CC0. I said "Yes you can. Just give Moonbirds new art with new commercial rights." @Proof_xyz announced today they're doing exactly that. 2. No one fudded Moonbird Mythics. It was perfectly executed, from minting to… https://t.co/t13SE5ZiQ1
I see a lot of people confused about how they could reverse the CC0 decision The answer is they can't The original Moonbirds art is CC0 forever But "we’ll be introducing a new art direction" means they will try to switch to everyone to new art that does have IP restrictions
1) You can't put the CC0 genie back in the bottle 2) I'm not sure why you would want to. If some rando wants to build out a lucrative Moonbirds derivative you should let them https://t.co/o7OTNgoZ2k

I feel compelled to comment on this only because we are huge CC0 enjoyoooors at 6529 and release a lot of CC0 work. I believe, in most jurisdictions, you cannot recall a CC0 license. Not legal advice, etc, etc Other than that, I wish the Moonbirds the best https://t.co/VSuAk4ZK2t
