The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed veteran guard Dalton Risner to a one-year deal, which includes a signing bonus, per-game bonuses, and incentives for being a majority-season starter. Risner, who started 11 games last season, is expected to have the inside track to the starting position, potentially pushing Blake Brandel, who recently signed a $3.25 million deal and has been working with the first team in early OTAs, back into a depth role. Dan Feeney was with the first team in Brandel's absence. The move is seen as a strategic decision to bolster the Vikings' offensive line, which Risner significantly enhanced last year.
I’ve been surprised to see the contracts Risner has signed the last two years. Wasn’t even signed until the season started last year. He’s a starting guard. No injury history. Prime career age. This deal is one for an injured 30 year old vet. It’s odd. https://t.co/rUANUrKTMH
Regarding the Dalton Risner re-signing, it's my understanding that left guard Blake Brandel will remain with the first-team offense in OTAs. Brandel was not at today's practice for personal reasons. Dan Feeney was with the 1's. Risner started 11 games last season.
Full @espn story on OG Dalton Risner re-signing with the Vikings. Blake Brandel got a new deal and had been working with the first team in early OTAs. Late May is early for a left guard controversy, but here we are... 😉 https://t.co/BKJ0fkC66d
The Vikings had signed backup Blake Brandel to a deal that will pay him $3.25 million this year. He has worked with the first team in early OTAs, but now Dalton Risner has returned to the mix. https://t.co/iL34gCJwFE
This always made sense -- Risner gave Vikings' OL a nice edge last year. https://t.co/Y3Ygi6lMkd
It seems safe to assume that the return of Dalton Risner means he has the inside track at starting for the Vikings once again. That would mean Blake Brandel, who drew praise from offensive coordinator Wes Phillips last week, would slide back into a depth role.
