The NFL Players Association is considering a proposal to change the NFL offseason calendar, potentially ending Spring Football practices and moving on-field work to late June-early July. This proposal would extend the OTA-style ramp-up, including strength and conditioning and non-padded work, straight into training camp without a six-week break. The change aims to maintain the gains from the offseason program, as the current six-week break is seen as diminishing these gains. However, this shift could negatively impact coaches, personnel departments, and families, as the mid-June to mid-July shutdown is valued for family vacations. Additionally, the change might not be beneficial for rookies and teams undergoing significant changes. The proposal also includes an 18-game season with 2 preseason games, which could create a dead time between the draft and the new camp ramp-up.

Potential change to NFL calendar could negatively impact staffs, families https://t.co/k6oKYI3ZcO
Interesting. Though I see value in OTAs and mini camps, I’ve never understood the current calendar. The six-week break from the end of OTAs until training seemingly diminishes the gains from the off-season program. Guys are training on their own for over a month before jumping… https://t.co/kuLi71PzzU
A working draft of an NFL Players Association proposal to the league could effectively end Spring Football practices and move onfield work to late June-early July. Good for vets, maybe not too good for rookies and teams undergoing changes. Details: https://t.co/X4LbqskRMK
Let’s go with this. Let’s assume this comes with 18 games + 2 preseason games. You report for “camp” June 15th ish and now it’s July 31st … you’ve had weeks straight of “camp” and haven’t even hit anyone yet. And still have weeks till your first preseason game. Cool. Sounds… https://t.co/EHueMaW2dc
Good for players, annoying for the rest of the league which treasures the mid-June to mid-July shutdown for family vacations. https://t.co/X6AEFL0MLf
I don’t get the need for this. Also, the NFL likes to string together events in its long offseason, to keep public focus on the game. This would create a dead time between the draft and whenever this camp ramp-up starts. The current setup works pretty well. https://t.co/8QZt8r4uIG
This is going to suck for coaches/personnel departments. The break in the NFL calendar married up well with end of school year, which allowed families to have quality time together. Getting your break while school is still in session would be a bummer. https://t.co/DThRp72c0y
Basically, the idea here would be to roll an extended, OTA-style ramp-up — strength and conditioning, non-padded work, etc. — straight into training camp without a six-week break/de-escalation in between. A major change. https://t.co/gVgVDiYmGj
