The NFL is considering a significant change to its offseason schedule, potentially extending training camps while eliminating voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs). This proposal, which would roll an extended OTA-style ramp-up into training camp without a six-week break, aims to streamline the conditioning process. However, the idea has met with mixed reactions. Some believe it could benefit players' physical preparation, similar to adjustments made during the Covid-19 pandemic. Others, including players and coaches, are concerned about the increased workload and the impact on personal time, especially during summer. The proposal, backed by the NFLPA, also suggests the possibility of an 18-game season with two preseason games, further extending the football calendar from mid-June to late February. Critics argue that the elimination of OTAs could hinder the building of friendships and relationships among players.
Let’s go with this. Let’s assume this comes with 18 games + 2 preseason games. You report for “camp” June 15th ish and now it’s July 31st … you’ve had weeks straight of “camp” and haven’t even hit anyone yet. And still have weeks till your first preseason game. Cool. Sounds… https://t.co/EHueMaW2dc
Clearly the start of changing the offseason schedule for 18 games Also… I continue to be surprised by NFL players hatred of OTAs. You’re trading voluntary workouts under less stress for more training camp? OTAs are when you start building friendships and relationships. This… https://t.co/Prt2z5F8nZ
Can’t imagine players being in favor of a longer training camp. Maybe report in mid-June and only scattered breaks through January? Maybe I read them wrong. https://t.co/VKve6Rsp2L
So the @NFLPA is offering to add a month (or more) of mandatory training camp while eliminating the voluntary practices? Cool. And brilliant, really. I mean, who wouldn't want more mandatory work? https://t.co/pRECvwzPW3
I cannot imagine how this ends well. Players tend to despise training camp, which is already a grind in the teeth of summer heat/humidity, and you’re going to extend it? While likely adding two weeks to the season (18th game, added bye)? You’re talking Football June to late-Feb… https://t.co/le7mu953pK
Prediction: Players, coaches and anyone else involved in football ops would end up absolutely despising this. As it stands, the calendar is largely filled, but there is a month where guys can get away, and people's kids are out of school for vacation, and the league shuts down. https://t.co/9ZhEjDUV13
I believe this is how it used to be years ago--training camps were way longer than they are today. But then again, if I remember correctly, there were as many as six preseason games for players to round into shape. Not sure how eliminating OTAs would work if they eventually want… https://t.co/2T48HiPCDW
Basically, the idea here would be to roll an extended, OTA-style ramp-up — strength and conditioning, non-padded work, etc. — straight into training camp without a six-week break/de-escalation in between. A major change. https://t.co/gVgVDiYmGj
So not an end to OTAs.. seemingly just a readjustment of when they’d be They did something similar during Covid.. I believe most of the guys loved it for their bodies and such going into training camp https://t.co/BCAUCnsq0z
