The Detroit Tigers had until 1 p.m. to reach salary agreements with arbitration-eligible players Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Jake Rogers, and Akil Baddoo, with expectations of agreements being reached. However, after the deadline, it became clear that pitcher Casey Mize might be headed to an arbitration hearing in February. Despite no acrimony between the parties, they could not agree on a salary number, with Mize filing for $840,000 and the Tigers countering with $815,000, which is just $75,000 above the minimum salary for 2024. If no agreement is reached before the hearing, a judge will settle the $25,000 difference. Mize will be only the second Tigers player since 2001 to take the club to arbitration over such a narrow margin.
Casey Mize will be the second Tigers player since 2001 to take the club to arbitration -- over $25,000 https://t.co/erZWdDRFdD via @detroitnews
With Casey Mize and the Tigers only $25K apart on arbitration figures, I have to wonder what the valuation on org. time spent on prepping and arguing an arbitration case looks like.
So Tigers and Mize will go to arbitration over $25K. https://t.co/EYmZ29Y3si
Casey Mize has filed for $840,000, while the Tigers countered at $815,000.
Casey Mize requested $840K in arb, the Tigers offered $815K, just $75K above minimum salary for 2024, sources tell @TheAthletic. Mize, drafted No. 1 overall in ‘18, missed most of last two seasons recovering from TJ. (More)
Tigers and Casey Mize heading for a salary arbitration hearing next month https://t.co/erZWdDRFdD via @detroitnews
The Tigers will almost certainly go to an arbitration hearing with Casey Mize. That doesn't mean there is acrimony on either side. They just didn't see eye to eye on a number so they will let a judge settle the issue in Feb.
So it looks like Casey Mize might be headed to arbitration. Though the Tigers can continue to negotiate up to the hearing date, which will be next month https://t.co/PDEKZIAL3C
