New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is facing significant backlash over its proposed congestion tax, which aims to levy a 24-hour charge on vehicles entering Manhattan. Critics argue that the tax is a cash grab that will hurt local industries and limit mobility. The NYC Taxi Workers Alliance and other groups have voiced strong opposition, and several lawsuits have been filed to challenge the tax's implementation. One notable lawsuit from the Town of Hempstead, which is the largest town in the nation with over 750,000 residents, accuses the MTA of overreach. Additionally, a motion by the MTA to dismiss one of the lawsuits was denied, indicating judicial support for the challengers. A 22-page PDF from the NYC Department of Transportation Alternatives reveals that many plans are still in early stages. There is also a call for a proper Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and court grants to support the opposition.
“I can’t believe that New York City is instituting Congestion Pricing, where everyone has to pay a fortune for the ‘privilege’ of coming into the City, which is in desperate trouble without it. It is a big incentive not to come..." https://t.co/oTOkx8IGwG
I'm in favor of NYC's congestion pricing because it is genuinely overcongested, but any city that uses congestion pricing should categorically lose all federal transportation $ within the congestion zone on the grounds that the congestion tax should pay for it https://t.co/d7AOE4LxqN
I can’t believe that New York City is instituting Congestion Pricing, where everyone has to pay a fortune for the “privilege” of coming into the City, which is in desperate trouble without it. It is a big incentive not to come - there are plenty of other places to go. It’s been a…
The NYC congestion tax will reduce the # of trips into Manhattan - and will be highly visible to commuters. Pressure is on for the funds raised for the MTA to actually facilitate more/better transit trips https://t.co/AM80v9stOf
Out of the ~2.7 MILLION people who enter the proposed congestion taxation zone in NYC on a daily basis, less than 40K enter via bicycling, a fringe form of transportation most commonly associated with children. These bike lane considerations tied to congestion taxation are… https://t.co/6ek0mgSenZ
The people love congestion pricing! https://t.co/b3prkgkark
Your reminder that New Yorkers Against Congestion Pricing Tax has an active lawsuit in the US Southern District to put the brakes on Congestion Pricing and to demand a proper EIS, which we hope to have court grant. Please consider donating, r/t and share. https://t.co/bGK0SGnsQ7
The Miserable Transit Authority & Department of TransAlt couldn't care less about NYers, the various cultures, or the businesses that keep this city alive. This congestion tax is a scam! They've never heard us, and expecting them to have a heart? Impossible—they don't have one. https://t.co/7wCSaJ8Gbc
Good news on one of the Congestion Pricing lawsuits: the @MTA's motion to dismiss was DENIED. Please contribute to the lawsuit - donating $15 to the lawsuit to stave off a $15 daily tax is worth it. https://t.co/fEFQO5YrCR
The NYC Taxi Workers Alliance knows that the @MTA’s Congestion Tax is nothing but a cash grab that will hurt local industry. They’re joining the thousands who have spoken in unison: Don’t force through the Congestion Tax. https://t.co/aZkTFTdddc
MY FELLOW AMERICANS The Town of Hempstead on Long Island, the largest town in this great nation with a population exceeding 750K, is suing the unelected MTA and FHA over its outlandish desire to implement a tyrannical “congestion” tax to be levied for the mere privileging of…
Is the MTA ready for congestion taxation? Introducing a tax to drive dependency on this governmental system as a "substitute" is absolute insanity. https://t.co/bxj7TUxn9G
Congestion pricing will do none of these things except further limit your ability to get around efficiently and affordably. And it's not going to be limited to Manhattan, it's coming to your neighborhood too. Soon enough you won't be able to drive more than a few blocks from… https://t.co/tyaqxpi9Qs
This 22-page PDF released by the NYC Department of Transportation Alternatives gleefully showcases how wildly unprepared the government is as a whole for congestion taxation. The vast majority of these plans are in the early planning stages and are for items that the MTA's own… https://t.co/WrQHaATsi4
This is the absolute worst congestion at 5:15 that I have seen lately on this road that traverses Manhattan connecting New Jersey to all points east and vice versa. It’s really not bad for a metro area of 20M. The MTA seeks to introduce a 24 hour a day tax for this temporal… https://t.co/o0PX3aFQmd
