New York City is embroiled in a heated debate over its transportation and congestion policies. Drivers will be legally required to pay a minimum of $15 per day to the MTA, despite 45% of bus riders evading fares. The MTA already collects $3 billion from drivers in tolls and taxes. Critics attribute the city's congestion to 'road diets,' low speed limits, and 'useless' bike lanes, which were not issues 20 years ago. In addition to existing expenses, a $40 'Congestion Tax' for crossing the GWB in 2024 has been proposed, inciting further frustration. A recent incident involved 5 buses bringing in hundreds of new arrivals to the city and a robbery at the Roosevelt Hotel resulting in a substantial NYPD response. Fare evasion is seen as a significant problem, with calls to 'fight it brutally' and suggestions to remove bike lanes and 'open streets' to reduce congestion. The congestion tax policy, enacted in 2019 alongside bail reform, is criticized for imposing a daily fee to avoid the perceived increase in violence within the transit system since then. Moreover, fifteen buses, along with flights and other buses, are bringing in new arrivals daily, with legal tourists facing 2-3 hours waiting in line at customs at JFK.
FIFTEEN BUSES. On top of all the flights and other buses quietly arriving every day. Tourists who come to NYC the legal way spend 2-3 hours waiting in line at customs at JFK, then pay for their own transportation, hotel and food in a city that’s bursting at the seams. https://t.co/I5M1Vj4ldS
Congestion taxation was passed in 2019, in the same legislative session as bail reform. The NYC transit system is irrefutably more dangerous today than it was in 2019. The MTA mandates that you must to pay $15 per day if you want to avoid this increased violence. https://t.co/9Aq8eYEulU

Get rid of the bike lanes, “open streets,” and obstructions in the streets created @NYC_DOT and congestion will DECREASE.
Fare evasion is not a minor issue, it is costing others the "congestion" pricing tax, which is a major tax. Fight it brutally. This is not about encouraging people to "not take cars," this is others paying for fare evasion. Say it! https://t.co/874oWV9pRZ

If you commute, want to see a doctor, or grab dinner in New York City, get ready to pay $40 to go over the GWB in 2024 — in addition to gas and parking. Yes, a $40 Congestion Tax! https://t.co/Trqi6g6z8S
The reason why NYC has so much congestion and traffic is because of these useless “road diets”, ridiculous speed limits and useless bike lanes. 20 years ago, this was never a problem. Yet they want to charge us for their screwup.
EQUALITY IN NYC: Drivers of vehicles will be lawfully forced to fork over a minimum of $15 per day to the MTA so that FORTY-FIVE PERCENT of bus riders can illegally evade the fare. Drivers already directly contribute $3 BILLION to the MTA in the form of tolls and taxes.
