Legal weed sales in New York have increased amid a crackdown on unlicensed shops, according to Governor Hochul. The state has been grappling with the regulation and licensing of the cannabis industry since its legalization in 2021. Despite legalization, there are currently fewer than 200 licensed marijuana sellers in New York, while unauthorized shops number around 3,000. New York City's Operation Padlock, a multi-agency effort involving the NYC Sheriff, NYPD, and supported by CM Kristy Marmorato and the NYC Mayor, aims to protect public health and safety by targeting these illegal operations. The NYC Sheriffs are reportedly storing seized cannabis in various locations due to the volume of confiscated goods.
