Chestnut Returns for July 4 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Showdown

Sixteen-time champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut will return to the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Friday, ending a one-year absence caused by a sponsorship dispute with Major League Eating over his endorsement of plant-based hot dogs. The 41-year-old Californian, who set the world record by consuming 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in 2021, has signed a new three-year agreement that restricts him to Nathan’s products.

Chestnut’s comeback sets up a rematch with defending men’s champion Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, who claimed last year’s Mustard Belt with 58 hot dogs after Chestnut’s withdrawal. Bertoletti says he is targeting the 60-dog threshold, while sportsbooks make Chestnut an overwhelming favourite, offering odds of up to –2,500 and pricing his over/under at 71.5 hot dogs; BetMGM reports 86 % of wagers backing the under.

The contest, staged outside Nathan’s flagship at Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island, will begin at 10:45 a.m. ET with the women’s competition, followed by the men at noon. Ten-time women’s champion Miki Sudo returns after setting the division record of 51 hot dogs in 2024 and opens with an over/under line of 44.5. ESPN holds exclusive broadcast rights through 2029 and will air Friday’s event on ESPN3 and ESPN2.

Winners of both divisions will collect the $10,000 first-place prize and the coveted Mustard Belt, maintaining a New York City Independence Day tradition that dates to 1972.
