Washington Huskies running back Dillon Johnson, who had a standout season with 1,156 rush yards, 16 touchdowns, 673 yards after contact, and 40 missed tackles forced, suffered an injury during the final minute of the Sugar Bowl victory over Texas, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming national championship game against Michigan. Johnson, who has been a key player for Washington, was seen with little pressure on his right leg and was taken into the injury tent. Despite the injury, he was hyped for his team's win and was later seen wearing a boot on his right leg but without crutches. Washington's head coach Kalen DeBoer indicated that Johnson's injury was an aggravation of a previous injury from late in the regular season and also a new left foot/ankle injury. Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb later announced that x-rays were negative and Johnson is expected to play in the national championship. Johnson himself confirmed he would be ready to play, stating 'I'm as good as it's gonna be. I'm gonna put it in God’s hands and I’ll be ready to play on Monday.' He was seen participating in early warmups without a noticeable limp, his right foot heavily taped and a sleeve on his left leg, and was announced as a starter. However, after the first play in which he gained six yards, Johnson went straight to the injury tent but returned to the field shortly after.
